SSC CGL 2026 • Tier 1 English

SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1 is approaching, and English can become one of the most scoring sections if your vocabulary is strong.

According to the official SSC CGL 2026 notification, Tier 1 is tentatively scheduled for August–September 2026. The Tier 1 examination contains 25 English Comprehension questions carrying 50 marks, with a sectional timer of 15 minutes. There is also a negative marking of 0.50 marks for every incorrect answer.

That makes quick recognition of words especially useful. If you already understand a word, you can often answer a synonym, antonym, contextual vocabulary or comprehension question in seconds rather than trying to guess its meaning during the examination.

The selection was also cross-checked against current SSC CGL vocabulary collections from Testbook, Physics Wallah and Oliveboard, which similarly focus on high-frequency vocabulary and previous-exam patterns.

SSC also maintains an official section for previous-year question papers, which students should use alongside vocabulary revision.

How to Remember Vocabulary for SSC CGL

1. Learn the Word With Its Opposite

Instead of learning:

Prudent = Cautious

learn:

Prudent → Cautious → Reckless

You now remember both a synonym and an antonym.

2. Use the Word in a Sentence

Knowing the dictionary meaning is not enough.

For example:

Meticulous = very careful

is useful.

But:

“She kept meticulous records of every transaction.”

shows you how the word actually behaves in a sentence.

3. Use Word Families

One word can help you learn several others.

For example:

Revere → Reverence → Irreverence

Genuine → Genuinely

Diligent → Diligence → Diligently

Transient → Transitory

This reduces the amount of completely new information you have to memorise.

4. Revise Difficult Pairs Together

Some words become much easier when learned as pairs:

Loquacious ↔ Taciturn

Prudent ↔ Reckless

Amicable ↔ Hostile

Genuine ↔ Fake

Eternal ↔ Transient

Stringent ↔ Lenient

5. Test Yourself Instead of Just Reading

Cover the meaning and ask yourself:

“What does laconic mean?”

Then reverse it:

“Which word means using very few words?”

If you can answer in both directions, the word is much more likely to stay in your memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an official SSC CGL 2026 vocabulary list?

No. SSC does not release an official list of 100 vocabulary words that candidates must memorise.

This list has been curated using vocabulary reported from previous SSC examinations and current SSC exam-oriented vocabulary resources.

How many English questions are there in SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1?

According to the official SSC CGL 2026 notification, Tier 1 contains 25 English Comprehension questions carrying a maximum of 50 marks. The 2026 scheme also provides a 15-minute sectional timer for each subject, and an incorrect answer attracts 0.50 marks negative marking.

When will SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1 be held?

SSC’s official notification gives August–September 2026 as the tentative schedule for the Tier 1 Computer Based Examination. Candidates should continue checking the official SSC website because the Commission states that examination schedules are tentative and changes are communicated through its website.

Are vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms important for SSC preparation?

Yes. Previous SSC vocabulary compilations contain hundreds of synonym and vocabulary questions reported from earlier SSC examinations, and the detailed SSC English Language and Comprehension syllabus also explicitly includes vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, spellings, idioms and phrases, and one-word substitution.

Should I memorise only these 100 words?

No.

Think of these 100 words as a focused starting and revision list.

Continue solving previous-year questions, reading unfamiliar words in context and keeping a separate notebook of vocabulary that you personally find difficult.

Should I learn Hindi meanings or English meanings?

Use the Hindi meaning to understand a difficult word quickly, but try to remember its English meaning, synonym, antonym and usage as well.

For example:

Obstinate Hindi: जिद्दी Synonym: Stubborn Antonym: Flexible

That gives you several ways to recognise the answer in an examination.

Final Revision Tip

Do not attempt to memorise 100 isolated definitions.

For every word, try to remember this pattern:

WORD → MEANING → SYNONYM → ANTONYM → ONE EXAMPLE

For example:

Laconic → using few words → concise → verbose → “His laconic reply surprised everyone.”

If you can recall all five parts, your vocabulary is becoming usable rather than simply memorised.
